At GLS, students automatically get a German language certificate documenting their level on the European Framework scale (A1-C2). This certificate is free of charge and, and a GLS B2 certificate is accepted by many employers and institutions in Berlin. However, for a certificate with international recognition, we do recommend taking the TestDaF or Goethe exams.
China’s Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is the standardized international test used to determine the fluency of non-native speakers in Chinese and it is used by all Chinese universities to assess the enrollment of foreign students and by a number of Chinese companies looking for foreign employees. The choice of exams for Russian is limited. There is an academic exam called TRKI, administered by a group of Russian state universities but this exam only makes sense for international students going for a degree programme in Russia. A good foundation or pre-masters diploma needs to contain some serious specialisation. Firstly, it is essential for students to become accustomed to studying a subject in a foreign language, so that in their first week at university they do not feel overwhelmed by the difficulty of having to follow a course at native speaker level. Secondly, there needs to be a strong element of study skills, appropriate to either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
